The decline in the price of oil (spot price) and the increase in the price of future contract that ultimately led MGRM to financial distress. The market turned from backwardation to contango. As a result, they had big losses including the loss from the daily settlement led to huge margin calls (1.5 billion dollars). The hedging program was not so faulty, the only problem that they have cash flow problem for the daily settlement, then the hedging program was a mismatch for the company
