The chatbot uses a rule-based pattern matching system to evaluate user messages which it uses to generate appropriate responses.

The source code displays core logic implementation through the generateChatbotResponse() function which exists in the api/chatbot.php file. The function processes the user's message by converting it to lowercase then uses PHP's preg_match() function with regular expressions to identify particular keywords which include "hi", "hello", "recommend", "burger", "location", "order", and "help".

Chatbot.php employs frontend JavaScript to capture user input which it transmits through a POST request to the backend API. The backend system receives the message input which it processes to find matching patterns before delivering the corresponding response. The chatbot retrieves top-rated food carts from its database when users request recommendations which are then presented to customers with their respective names and ratings. The chatbot uses its collection of predefined messages to deliver a friendly default response when it does not find any matching patterns.

The system provides multiple functions which include MySQL-based chat history storage and typing indicators and quick action buttons and users' ability to delete their entire conversation history. The custom implementation provides complete control over the chatbot system while building a food cart recommendation system that serves users in Oman.
