As a profession, social work is committed to interdisciplinary, collaborative, community-based practice that includes the multifaceted and sometimes dissonant aspects of the individual, family and environment.A tremendous amount of activity and enthusiasm for IPE has been shown, specifically in the changing health care environment (Bridges, Davidson, Odegard, Maki, & Tomkowiak, 2011,; 2003; Levit, Balogh, Nass, & Ganz, 2013; Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC, 2011).

As a profession, social work is committed to interdisciplinary, collaborative, community-based practice that includes the multifaceted and sometimes dissonant aspects of the individual, family and environment. Therefore, social work is uniquely qualified to be a leader in the ever emerging field of interprofessional education (IPE) in health care. A tremendous amount of activity and enthusiasm for IPE has been shown, specifically in the changing health care environment (Bridges, Davidson, Odegard, Maki, & Tomkowiak, 2011,; 2003; Levit, Balogh, Nass, & Ganz, 2013; Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC, 2011). With the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, there is a rapidly increasing need for social workers trained to work as part of interprofessional teams(Andrews, Darnell, McBride, & Gehlert, 2013). IPE improves collaboration between health care providers by teaching students about the principles, ethics, and values of other professions as well as the skills critical to developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships(Thistlethwaite, 2012).
