Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They apply regardless of where you are from, what you believe, or how you choose to live your life. These rights are based on shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect, and independence. These values are defined and protected by law.
In 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which sets out the fundamental human rights to be universally protected. The declaration has been translated into over 500 languages and has inspired more than seventy human rights treaties, which are applied globally1.
Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination2.
The principle of universality of human rights is the cornerstone of international human rights law. This principle, as first emphasized in the UDHR, is repeated in many international human rights conventions, declarations, and resolutions2.
Human rights are inalienable and should not be taken away, except in specific situations and according to due process. They are indivisible and interdependent, which means that one set of rights cannot be enjoyed fully without the others2. For example, progress in civil and political rights facilitates the exercise of economic, social, and cultural rights, and vice versa2.
The promotion and protection of human rights have been a fundamental goal for the United Nations since its founding. When people are empowered to pursue their own destinies and have a say in their own futures, they can help ensure that their governments act responsibly. This is why the observance of human rights is a primary goal of the international community1.
