Schistosoma haematobium causes urinary
schistosomiasis. Urinary schistosomiasis can range
from asymptomatic, in cases of low worm burden, to
gross hematuria and obstructive uropathy in heavy
worm burden. In chronic cases, bladder carcinoma can
occur, and bladder calcification can result in extensive

genus Schistosoma. This condition affects nearly 200

worldwide, resulting in approximately 800,000 deaths
per year.4
Also called bilharziasis, these diseases are
caused by 3 main species within this genus. Schistosoma
mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum cause intestinal
and hepatic schistosomiasis;3 S. haematobium results in
urinary schistosomiasis. All schistosomes are transmitted
by contact with bodies of fresh water that are home to the
intermediate host of the schistosome, which are snails in
the genera Biomphalaria and Oncomelania (S. mansoni
and S. japonicum) and Bulinus (S. haematobium)
