The study found that the colour pattern mimicry group a butterfly belongs to is the biggest determinant of its flight behavior, rather than its species habitat or wing shape. Distantly related butterflies in the same colour pattern mimicry group have more similar flight behavior than closely related species with different warning coloration. This can help predators identify inedible butterflies more easily. Flight patterns are influenced by factors like air temperature and habitat.
The researchers studied mimicry in butterflies to see if flight behavior corresponds to color pattern, and found that behavioral mimicry is strong and widespread. They focused on the Heliconiini tribe and discovered that sharing flight behavior across different species helps send a "don't eat me" message to predators. The study also looked at ithomiine butterflies with similar color patterns, despite splitting from the Heliconiini tribe millions of years ago. Identifying the genes behind these behavioral changes will provide insight into how mimicry evolves.
