He cried himself to sleep. The boys in the workhouse ate their food in a large room made of stone. The food was served by the master of the workhouse and two women. The boys didn't get much to eat. They were given a bowl of thin soup three times a day, with a piece of bread on Sundays. The boys were always hungry. One of the boys was so hungry that he told the others he might eat the boy who slept next to him. The other boys believed him. After talking for a long time they decided that one of them should ask for more food. Oliver was chosen to do that. When the boys had eaten their soup that evening, Oliver went to the master of the workhouse. Oliver cried loudly. His mother lifted her head from her pillow and said, "Let me see the child and die."

"You must not talk about dying yet," said the doctor. He gave her the child to hold. She kissed the child on the forehead then fell back, dead.

"She was brought here last night," said the old woman.
"She was found lying in the street. She'd walked a long way. Her shoes were worn out. Nobody knows her name or where she came from."

The doctor lifted the girl's hand. "No wedding ring," he said. The girl was not married.

Oliver was sent to a special "baby farm" near the workhouse. There were thirty other children there. They were not given enough food to eat, or enough clothes.
Mrs. Mann, the woman who was supposed to look after the children, kept the money she. was given to buy things for the children for herself. At the age of nine, Oliver was pale, thin and short for his age. On Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble the beadle, came to see Mrs. Mann. She saw him through the window.

"Quick!" she said to the girl who worked with her. Take Oliver and those other children upstairs to be washed. Then she ran outside to unlock the gate. (the gate was always kept locked). Mrs. Mann didn't want people to visit her unexpectedly. man, often bad tempered,

Oliver was taken away and locked up. Money was offered to anyone who would take Oliver away and use him for work.
