According to our survey given to 21 geriatric nurses at the Aballa Elkahlawi
( El Bakiaat El Salihaat Hospital), a Geriatric care facility located in ELhadaba El
wosta, Mokkattam Cairo, Egypt. Out of the care givers surveyed, 100% reported
that the application was “very clear” or “clear” to understand and use as a
medication reminder for geriatric patients. Eighty percent of Geriatric patients
reported that the application is easy and simple to use.
The data collected indicated positive interactions with the patients and their
caregivers as patients reported they were very willing to share their medication
compliance with their caregivers via the medicine reminder application. Caregiver
data by Ahmed et al demonstrate that medication compliance challenges are
diminished when reminders are initiated by the patient’s family members. Geriatric
patients often feel a sense of loneliness. When care givers receive the medication
reminder and deliver the reminder personally to the patient, loneliness is reduced
through this personal interaction. Therefore, future designs should emphasize and
nurture connections between geriatric patients, doctors, their family and friend-
based caregivers.
Finally, geriatric patients utilize numerous medications, doctors, and
providers. Chronic diseases require long-term medication, yet some ailments, such
as an infection require a short-term dose of antibiotics. These changes should be
updated for all doctors involved in the patient’s care. Future updates include
settings for taking medications with meals or an empty stomach, contraindications,
potential allergies, and side effects. Additionally, electronically linking the
patient’s medical records and medications though the application, doctors can
accurately and safely prescribe medications and upload the new medications,change dosages, and identify contraindications at each visit. Records will be
transparent for all caregivers and most importantly, current.
