Method A: The salinity can be measured by titration in the laboratory using a silver nitrate solution. Procedure: Collect a sample (15 ml) of freshwater in a clean container. Add a few drops of potassium chromate indicator solution to the freshwater sample. The indicator solution will turn the sample yellow. Fill a burette with a standard solution of silver nitrate.. Slowly add the silver nitrate solution from the burette to the freshwater sample until the indicator changes from yellow to red. Note the volume of silver nitrate solution used in the titration. Calculate the salinity of the freshwater sample using the formula: Salinity (PSU)= [Cl] x 1.805 +0.03 the titrating solution of silver nitrate (AgNO3) is made in such a way that 2 ml of it corresponds to 1 g of Cl per kg of water.
