The British Mandate and Rising Tensions

After World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Britain was granted the Mandate of Palestine, and the Balfour Declaration of 1917, in which Britain expressed its support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, led to rising tensions. Peace Efforts and Ongoing Struggle

Currently, the West Bank is dotted with Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law but enjoy broad support in Israel. Gaza, controlled by Hamas, is under blockade and sees periodic conflict with Israel. The humanitarian situation is dire, with significant restrictions on movement and access to basic necessities. Palestinians continue to seek an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. By contrast, many Israelis prioritize security and recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.
