La technique concerne les sols meubles non cohésifs. Elle consiste à faire passer une certaine quantité de sol à
travers une série de tamis normalisée (AFNOR, ASTM...) à maille décroissante du haut vers le bas (figure ci-
contre.
Chaque tamis va retenir une quantité de sol appelée refus de tamis, ce qui passe à travers le tamis s’appelle le
tamisa. Les refus de tamis vont être pesé un à un sur une balance au 1/100eme de gramme puis cumulés. Les refus
cumulés sont ensuite exprimés en % par rapport au poids de départ.
Si on désigne par Øi les diamètres des tamis (en mm), par les Ri les refus aux niveau des différents tamis (en
grammes) et par P le poids total de départ, nous pouvons alors construire le tableau, ci-après :
