The rise in diabetes and metabolic syndrome, often linked to obesity caused by urbanization, lifestyle changes, and high-fat diets, has increased the use of low-calorie artificial sweeteners (NNS) like saccharine, aspartame, sucralose, and stevia. These NNS, approved by the US FDA within acceptable daily intake limits, are common in beverages and diet products and are readily available in the Indian market. This study utilizes these four commonly available sweeteners.

Recent past has observed an increased incidence of
diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Obesity is
suggested as one of the major causes of type II diabetes.
The urbanization, changes in lifestyle and too much
intake of fat may be the factors leading to obesity.1
The
awareness of these data and consciousness of health and
fitness have lead to the use of low-calorie sugar substi￾tutes. Artificial sweeteners are alternatives to normally
used sweeteners (sucrose) also known as non-nutritive
sweeteners (NNS) with low calorie.2
They are commonly
used in beverages and dietary products. The United States
Food and Drug Administration authority has approved
saccharine, aspartame, sucralose, neotame, acesulfame-K,
and stevia for use in humans within the acceptable
daily intake limit.1
In the present study, we have used
saccharine, aspartame, sucralose, and stevia, which are
commonly available in Indian market
