Alkaline batteries were developed in the 1960s and have become the standard power source for portable devices such as remote controls, flashlights, and toys.


Alkaline batteries work on the principle of an electrochemical reaction between zinc (Zn) and manganese dioxide (MnO2). Potassium hydroxide (KOH), a strong base that gives the battery its name, is used as the electrolyte.




  1. Anode (negative electrode):
    The anode is made of zinc powder. During discharge, zinc is oxidized to form zinc ions:
