One of the main issues involving standard languages, models of pronunciation and native speakers is to

define them. Indeed, when attempting to provide a meaning for ‘standard’, it makes one question whether
a standard really exists if it is constantly undergoing change, while at the same time there are a range of
competing standards. Similarly, it is difficult to define a native speaker of English (McKay, 2002, p. 28) as
it is unclear if speakers who acquire two languages simultaneously should be considered native speakers.
For example, in Brunei many speakers learn both English and Malay equally fluently. Does that mean that
they are native speakers of both?
Despite this problem, many native speakers of British and American English undoubtedly exist, and some
of them are perceived to speak with a standard accent. Here a brief description of differences between RP
and GA will be offered before some misconceptions about the two standards are discussed and alternative
standards are considered.
