However, it also emphasizes the importance of ensuring that expansion efforts align with mutual interests, respect sovereignty, and promote cooperation among member states. This is because Turkey has been a NATO member since 1952 and has developed strong security partnerships within the alliance. It has benefited from NATO's collective defense framework, especially during the Cold War period and in addressing common security threats.and Turkey's geopolitical location in a volatile region, including proximity to conflict zones such as Syria and Iraq, shapes its security perspectives. NATO expansion, when conducted responsibly, is seen as a way to enhance regional stability and address shared security challenges.
An example that illustrates Turkey's beliefs regarding NATO expansion and its impact on regional security can be seen in its approach towards the Black Sea region.Turkey views the Black Sea as a critical geopolitical area with strategic importance due to its energy resources, maritime trade routes, and proximity to NATO's eastern borders. As NATO has expanded to include countries bordering the Black Sea, such as Romania and Bulgaria, Turkey has actively engaged in regional security initiatives within the framework of NATO.
However, we recognize the complexity of this issue. Countries such as Russia may view NATO expansion, especially in regions close to their borders like the Black Sea, as provocative and a threat to their strategic interests. They argue that increased NATO presence in the region destabilizes the balance of power and contributes to military tensions..
