• A TBI cannot cause brain damage unless the person is knocked unconscious.
• Whiplash injuries to the neck cannot cause brain damage.

• People with brain damage look obviously different from people without brain damage.
• It is uncommon for a person with brain injury to have a change in personality, to be irritable or easily angered, or to feel depressed or hopeless.
• It is not common for people with brain damage to have problems with speech or walking.
• When a person with brain injury can walk again, his/her brain is almost fully recovered.
• A second blow to the head can help people remember things they had forgotten.
• How quickly people recover from TBI depends on how hard they work at it.
• Most people who are knocked unconscious wake up quickly and have no lasting effects.
• After a TBI, people can forget who they are and not recognize others, but be perfect in every other way.
• A person with a brain injury will be "just like new" in a few months.
• People who have one brain injury are not more likely to have a second.[3]
However, public appears to be aware of consequences of brain injuries. The study recommends to increase awareness about symptoms and longer term consequences of TBI through educational interventions and campaigns and to dispelling misconceptions about how TBI occurs and degree of severity.[2]
