of his entire life. Now he is an exhausted man in his sixties. Justifiably tired:
for more than thirty years he has been a traveling salesman. And he seems
to be a hard-working man. Yet it is only on the day of his suicide that he is
able to make the last payment on the mortgage of his house. He is not only
getting old and tired, he is beginning to find out that he is physically unable
to meet the demands of his job. Financially, he has been put on commission
like a freshman salesman. Worse, he feels guilty because he has not been able
to place his favorite son, his greatest and foremost concern, on the right path
which would lead to success in business. What makes his relation to Biff
