Relevant research indicates that "the development of technologies affects folklore, and student jokes are moving to the virtual space. New themes, related to the development of science, emerge, these themes were impossible in the time when there were, let us say, no computers or no knowledge about quantum physics or similar matters…In terms of content, the jokes and anecdotes in Internet portals continue such topics as shortage of money resources, exams and sessions” (Muktupāvela, 2018,p.10). These new forms of humor are called digital humor in which individuals use technology to form funny jokes in numerous ways. With the development of technology devices and society's knowledge, jokes are implemented in new ways and new themes.
“Digital humor can have six forms of presentation, namely interactive humor, funny photos, manipulations, phanimation, celebrity soundboards, and PowerPoint humor” (Shifman, 2007, p180). Technology integration enriches the humor phenomenon by diversifying the ways individuals communicate with each other, expressing humor in emojis, photos and videos. However, “Humor may be used to enhance the self in a way that is tolerant and non-detrimental to others (self-enhancing humor), or it may be done at the expense and detriment of one's relationships with others (aggressive humor)”( Martin et al.,2003,p. 37). While humor can be used as a way to enhance social relationships and relieve from life issues pressures, it can also be used to harass others or humiliate them. This indicates that humor can affect social interactions positively and negatively.
