Interactionism has been attacked for its subjective and
relativistic nature. Critics worry that if the world is based
on subjective meanings and interpretations, then it is
impossible for anything to be true or false, which would
reduce sociology down to a mess of individual opinions.
Furthermore, social structuralists criticise interactionism
for ignoring the wider social context that interaction takes
place in. From the Marxist perspective, interactionists fail
to take into account structural factors, as the distribution
of wealth and power, which constrain human behaviour.
Giddens has a “foot in both camps” in his theory of
“structuration”. He proposes that social structures do
influence behaviour, but these social structures are
constructed through social action and are therefore
subject to change.
