Youth Environmental Initiatives in Palestine Post-2021 War

Following the 2021 war on Gaza, I, along with several youth teams, engaged in various environmental initiatives to address the aftermath. One major activity involved cleaning the streets that had been heavily damaged. We worked tirelessly to remove dust and debris, successfully restoring the areas to approximately 70-80% of their original state. Our efforts included planting trees and other vegetation to revitalize the area and restore its vibrancy.

In 2022, I had the opportunity to meet with an environmental official to discuss the environmental issues facing the sea, including pollution and wastewater challenges. Gaza is in urgent need of numerous environmental projects to recover from the destruction. My plans for future projects and initiatives are focused on benefiting Gaza, which is enduring severe conditions and requires substantial environmental intervention.

Key Environmental and Health Priorities

Our primary focus is on improving environmental and health conditions. To address these, we need to begin with cleaning the sea from waste and tidying up the beaches. Utilizing the sea for desalination is crucial, especially given the challenges in accessing groundwater.

Additionally, we plan to address housing needs by constructing small homes or settlements for those without shelter. By setting up solar energy systems, we can generate electricity from solar panels. This electricity will be used to power necessary tools for repairs and to pump water into the agricultural lands that remain intact.

Restoring Natural Resources and Addressing Tree Loss

Restoring natural resources is a top priority. We aim to replace the trees lost during the conflict, starting with the palm trees in Deir al-Balah. The loss of these trees has had a significant impact on the area, and replanting is essential for environmental restoration.

Another critical issue is managing wastewater that has accumulated in the streets, contributing to various health problems. Addressing this issue is vital to prevent further health complications and environmental damage.

Leveraging Youth Energy and Community Involvement

Harnessing the energy of young people is crucial for implementing environmental initiatives. We will collaborate with relevant authorities to assess the impact of the wars on residential areas and streets to mitigate any potential health or environmental risks.

Previously, many areas were known for exporting a wide range of fruits and vegetables, but these have been destroyed. Our goal is to rehabilitate the remaining agricultural lands to restore their productivity and export capabilities. Agriculture is vital not only for food production but also for its broader environmental and economic benefits.

Conclusion

Achieving success in these environmental initiatives requires a combination of cooperation, meticulous planning, and sustained effort. Through these projects, we aim to improve the environment, support local communities, and enhance public health in Gaza. We are committed to restoring life and vitality to affected areas and providing sustainable solutions to the environmental challenges we face.
