From there, they rode a stagecoach north to mining country. The stage's wooden wheels had bounced and jumped over a road that was more trail than highway. It was like being trapped for several days in a small wooden box that someone was shaking. The ride was a bit longer than one hundred miles, but seemed like a thousand.
This morning, though, Dame Shirley and Fayette were rested and ready to continue their travels. They were going to Rich Bar to find work for Fayette. Dame Shirley and Fayette knew that Rich Bar had a population of several thousand miners. They also knew that it had just one doctor. Fayette was certain he would have plenty of opportunities to practice medicine there.
Friends in San Francisco had warned Dame Shirley not to go to the mines. One woman had predicted that she would never make it to Rich Bar alive. Another had said that Dame Shirley was crazy to think of living in a mining camp made up almost entirely of men. Even Fayette had advised her to remain in San Francisco. Everyone said that going to the mines was too dangerous for a woman.
