answer the question. The design is the researcher’s plan for the study, which
includes the method to be used, what data will be gathered, where, how, and
from whom. Quantitative researchers maintain that once this research plan is
set forth, it must be followed. Unhypothesized observed relationships among
variables may be reported and proposed as topics for future research, but they
should not replace the original intent of the study. In qualitative research, the
design is fl exible and may change during the investigation if appropriate. The
design of qualitative research is thus often described as “emergent.”
