When Petri first found the stela, he attributed it to Merenptah due to its finding place and due to the fact that it was inscribed by the cartouche of the King. When he found the stela and after studying it he knew tha was of great importance as it's one of the rare texts in ancient Egypt th mentions the word isrißr (Israel), so they mistakenly called it the Israel stela and Petri announced that "it would be the most famous piece in t world more than any other piece that he had discovered".
However this is a mistaken name for the stela as the stela was origina erected to commemorate one of the very important events that took place during the reign of Merenptah which was his victory on the coali forces: the ancient Libyans and Sea people who invaded Egypt during reign.

his 5th reignal year. As for the word isrißr it was mentioned by the way the end of the stela among other Canaanian cities, which means that i wasn't made to commemorate his victory upon isrißr but it was made to commemorate his victory upon the coalition forces.
When Petrie removed the stela from its place to be brought to the Egyptian museum, he found that the stela had another side that bares cartouche of Amenhotep III. This means that the stela originally belong nhotep III and was re-used by Merenptah
