OLE greatly increases user productivity by facilitating interoperability between various applications, but because of its widespread use and complexity which includes attack vectors like embedded code, external resources, Component Object Model (COM) objects Microsoft, and social engineering attacks it has also become a target for cyber threats. Point of contact The OLE file format, which contains XLS, DOC, and PPT files, is highly vulnerable to malware exploitation, as Checkpoint (2022) illustrates. While OLE files are present in 53% of malicious email attachments, only 5% of malicious web files use this format, according to Statista. Slightly different, Checkpoint's results show that OLE is the foundation for 22.3% of malicious email attachments and that OLE malware downloaded from the internet accounts for 5% of the total. These figures put OLE files in the top four file formats that malware targets most frequently. The more recent Microsoft Office Open XML (OOXML) Microsoft (2023f) file format and embedded objects based on OLE format also require OLE, which should be emphasized.
