Political power in Cuba weakened and shifted because no single source of authority was stable for long. During the 1950s Batista ruled mainly through government control and force. This allowed him to stay in power but it damaged trust and acceptance among the people. The more repression he used the more resistance grew and his backing slowly disappeared. Support from the United States also declined through an arms embargo and a failed effort to arrange a new leadership. When loyalty inside the country faded especially among citizens and political groups force by itself could no longer hold the regime together. Castro and Guevara used this moment to present the revolution as a new and stronger source of authority. After taking power in 1959 the new leadership acted fast. They punished Batista supporters through trials and executions. They removed political parties limited the press and brought unions and organizations under state control. They also built a large militia. This shows how power can be effective because control of force and institutions allows rapid change. It also shows the limits of power because heavy repression creates fear anger and long term resistance and can increase conflict with other countries.

Having strong international backing but weak support at home creates an unstable system. Batista depended on outside support but once people inside Cuba saw his rule as corrupt and violent his power collapsed quickly. On the other side strong internal support with limited international acceptance can still allow a government to rule but at a high cost. After 1959 Castro gained strong internal control by managing the state and mobilizing the population. However his anti American position brought serious pressure from the United States including economic sanctions and the Bay of Pigs invasion. To survive Cuba relied on the Soviet Union for trade weapons and protection which later led to the missile crisis. During that crisis decisions were made by larger powers without Cuba’s approval. This shows that international alliances can protect a state but also reduce its independence. In simple terms internal support and external support both matter and when one is missing power becomes fragile.
