It is claimed that there is a narrator who works as a reporter traveling to India on a second-class train when he meets Peachy Carnehan, a white man who is planning to extort money from a local Indian prince. Carnehan asks the narrator to deliver a letter to a friend named Dan Dravot. The narrator agrees to this because the two young men belong to Freemasonry. A few days later, Carnehan and Dan Dravot appear in the narrator's office. They are planning an expedition to invade Kafiristan, and the narrator agrees to that. Carnehan and Dan Dravot disguise themselves as a mad priest and his servant, and they travel to Kazakhstan, carrying with them 20 British rifles. The narrator learns that these are two young men across the border, but he hears nothing about them. Three years later, the narrator returns to his office to receive a visitor. It is (Peachy Carnehan), but he seems exhausted and depressed. He was so scarred that the narrator did not recognize him at first.
