Once in office, President Thomas Jefferson wanted to secure United States trading on the Mississippi River.This exploration led to the rapid migration of settlers to the Pacific Northwest.However, when slaves in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (later known as Haiti) revolted and Britain resumed its war with France, the French emperor surprised Jefferson by offering to sell not only New Orleans, but the entire Louisiana region.

Mississippi River. For this reason, he sent representatives to France to negotiate the purchase
of New Orleans. Initially, Napoleon was not interested in selling New Orleans because he
hoped to revitalize the French colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere. However, when
slaves in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (later known as Haiti) revolted and Britain
resumed its war with France, the French emperor surprised Jefferson by offering to sell not
only New Orleans, but the entire Louisiana region. Because he believed it was important for
citizens in a republic to have access to land and due to the resources and promise the new
territory offered, Jefferson accepted the offer. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 was the United
States' largest land purchase, roughly doubling the country's size. It marked a turning point for
the new nation economically as it began to pursue prosperity within its own borders rather
than from foreign nations. The Lewis and Clark Expedition Even before the Louisiana
Purchase in 1803, President Jefferson appointed his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to
find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis chose William Clark to help him lead the
expedition that departed from St. Louis in May of 1804. Finally, in November of 1805, the
Lewis and Clark Expedition reached the Pacific Northwest coast. Many people thought the
explorers had died along the way, but the group returned to St. Louis in September of 1806
with valuable information about the Oregon and Louisiana territories. This exploration led to
the rapid migration of settlers to the Pacific Northwest. The pathway these settlers followed
from Missouri became known as the Oregon Trail.
