Introduction
Forging may be defined as the plastic flow of metal by the application of compressive forces in which a metal is altered in shape permanently without rupture.(i) It increases the strength of the metal by producing directional grains.The application of heat increases the plasticity of metals thus making it possible to conduct the operations necessary for the fabrication of various shapes of products.Historical data available show that the art of forging was in use for shaping implements of war such as swords, knives, protective armour, helmets, etc.

Introduction
Forging may be defined as the plastic flow of metal by the application of compressive forces in which a metal is altered in shape permanently without rupture. The application of heat increases the plasticity of metals thus making it possible to conduct the operations necessary for the fabrication of various shapes of products. The art of forging is the oldest process, and was developed with the earliest discovery of metals. Historical data available show that the art of forging was in use for shaping implements of war such as swords, knives, protective armour, helmets, etc. Iron and steel were the basic metals worked by craftsmen to manufacture tools with better physical and mechanical properties. Forging process occupies an indispensable position among the various manufacturing processes due to the following reasons.
(i) It increases the strength of the metal by producing directional grains. (ii) It refines the structure of the metal and renders it more dense.
(iii) It results in considerable saving in time and material when compared to production of similar components by cutting and machining from stock.
(iv) In many cases the machining operation is eliminated. Components up to a fair degree of accuracy can be produced by this method.
