The spirometry procedure is often carried out while seated in a normal manner. Spirometry measurements in the supine position, however, might be recommended in some neuromuscular conditions. For instance, FVC and FEV1 fall and become lower in the supine position compared to the upright position in persons with spinal cord injury at the level of T6 and above, suggesting an increased risk of hypoventilation during sleep.
