everyone in Maycomb. His parenting style is unique as he treats his
children as adults. He is someone whom everyone turns to in times of
doubt and trouble. He falls out with the people of Maycomb because he
cannot accept the racial prejudice against the Blacks. Going against
them he takes up the case of Tom Robinson who has been accused of
raping a white woman. He thereby exposes himself and his family to the
anger of the white community. Atticus practices the ethics of sympathy
and understanding and preaches the same to his children Scout and Jem.
He believes in the goodness of mankind and is determined to admire the
good and forgive the bad. By the end of the novel, he wins the respect
and admiration of his children. Jem is devoted to Atticus, while, Scout
loves him very much. Throughout the novel, Atticus is consistent and
committed to being just to everyone and willing to look at matters from
the perspective of others. Atticus thus remains the novel's moral guide
and voice of conscience.
