This process allows for the recovery of around 75% of butanes and 85% to 90% of pentanes and heavier molecules from the natural gas. Cryogenic processes are also used to extract NGLs such as ethane from natural gas. Although absorption methods can extract almost all of the heavier NGLs, lighter hydrocarbons like ethane are more complex. Under certain conditions it may simply be more economical to leave the lighter NGLs.
