1. What is the form of this poem? How does it help in highlighting the subject matter of the poem?

The poem "O Captain! My Captain!" by Walt Whitman is written in the form of an elegy, which is a poem that mourns the loss of someone or something. The poem is structured in three stanzas, each with a distinct rhythm and rhyme scheme. The first four lines of each stanza follow a more formal and regular rhythm, while the last four lines are shorter and more fragmented, creating a sense of emotional disruption and grief.

This form helps to highlight the subject matter of the poem, which is the death of a beloved leader (the Captain) and the mixed emotions of triumph and sorrow. The regular rhythm in the first part of each stanza reflects the joy and celebration of a successful journey, while the fragmented, shorter lines in the latter part convey the shock and grief of the Captain's death. The contrast between the two parts of each stanza mirrors the contrast between the public celebration and the private mourning.
