The physical characteristics of wastewater
Total solids: The average amount of total solids in home wastewater is 720 mg/L. The
total solid matter is divided between the dissolved and suspended solid states at a rate
of about 500 mg/L. Solids that are dissolved and suspended may be volatile or fixed.
Smell: The rotting of organic materials in wastewater produces gases that are the

of chloride into wastewater.
Alkalinity is the state in which certain elements, such as calcium, magnesium,
sodium, potassium, or ammonia, are present in the forms of oxide, carbonate, and
bicarbonates. Most wastewater is alkaline.
Nitrogen: Microorganisms in wastewater use nitrogen as a nutrient. When nitrogen
levels are insufficient, wastewater treatment may involve nitrogen addition.
Domestic wastewater has the necessary quantity of nitrogen for biological treatment.
In wastewater, phosphorus is a nutrient that bacteria need. The presence of
phosphorus in treated wastewater that is released into the receiving environment has
the potential to lead to eutrophication, which is the abnormal development of plants in
the water.
Sulfur: Wastewater naturally contains the sulfate ion. Anaerobic (without oxygen)
bacteria chemically convert sulfates to sulfides and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

in wastewater. This gas is extremely explosive and flammable. The toxicity of H2S is very high.
