SCENE 1 : Two brothers are sitting in their living room . ( MOM smiles as she reminisces . She returns to the stove but continues speaking to her sons , but in a louder tone so they can hear her ) Steve , you really look like your father , and I'm so surprised you haven't even ATTEMPTED to go through any of the boxes your dad left you before he passed away . Your level of nerdiness has continued to escalate at an alarming pace ; in fact , if you get any nerdier , you're going to have to change your last name because I don't want anybody to know we're related ( laughs at his own insults ) . ( laughs at his brother as he turns up the volume on the television to drown out the sound of LUCAS's voice ) LUCAS : ( speaking louder , almost shouting ) It's a law office , Steve , so I should look my best to be well - perceived . ( LUCAS waits for STEVE to reply , but STEVE continues tidying the room and never answers . LUCAS turns and walks away . STEVE puts his clothes in the washing machine and goes to his room . ) [ SCENE 2 : The next morning , in the living room . ] LUCAS : ( frantically looking for something in the living room . I think I've had enough " clothes talk " for a lifetime , actually . Now get out of here since Mom says I have to clean up . ( STEVE starts gathering up clothes in the living room , putting them in his hamper . ) LUCAS : Ok , I'm leaving . ( starts to walk away , but turns back to look at STEVE ) Bro , it wasn't really " clothes talk . " ( sniffs the pot on the stove , crinkles his nose ) Hey , what's in this pasta , anyway ? I danced with Leah Gomez that night , the prettiest girl at school . ( Lucas's voice begins to break as if he's going to cry ) STEVE : ( runs to pull the tie out of washing machine . It has been bleached . The black tie now has lighter spots . ) Sorry , man.STEVE : ( pulls out a silky , black pocket square with delicate white stripes ) I took Dad's tie ... well , the parts that weren't ruined ... and made it into a pocket square . STEVE : ( shifts uncomfortably on the couch ) Oh , you're such a goody two shoes , man . ( LUCAS nods , but stays quiet ) And before he died , he told me he couldn't wait for you boys to be old enough to wear his suits and ties . I'm telling you , honey , you should go through that box because there are shirts that I think would look great on you-- STEVE : ( interrupts MOM as he walks into the kitchen , looking uncomfortable and annoyed ) Okay , Mom , okay . ( Lucas pulls a silky , black tie out of the box . It has delicate , white stripes . ) It will be perfect for Friday . Their MOM is nearby in the kitchen , preparing dinner . ] STEVE : Bro , move . You're blocking the T.V. , and move that crummy box , too . LUCAS : It's not like you haven't seen this episode a thousand times ( rolls eyes ) . You don't need to get dressed up to apply for a job at Uncle Jon's office because you'll just be doing research for clients ' cases . MOM : ( peeks her head out of the kitchen and gives STEVE a stern look ) Steve ! MOM : ( rolls her eyes ) Oh , sure , that's way more important than talking about lovely memories of your handsome father ( speaking in a sarcastic tone ) . You can have either this pasta or the leftovers from last night , but clean up afterwards . And there's nothing nerdy about looking and feeling great , especially when all the girls start giving you attention ( winks at his brother in a joking way ) . STEVE : ( turns as white as a piece of paper , gulps ) Oh , dude , I might have accidentally put it in the washing machine last night-- LUCAS : WHAT ? You've ruined it . You just don't understand , and you'll never understand . Make it short ( looks toward the ground , appearing hurt and annoyed ) . I'm sorry I ruined it . But you have to understand ( clears throat ) ... just because I don't talk about Dad that much doesn't mean I don't understand how you feel . Listen-- ( clears throat again ) I miss him , too , okay ? The older one , STEVE , is watching television , and the younger brother , LUCAS , is rummaging through an old box of clothes .
