This study focuses on highlighting the main impacts and challenges facing the implementation of green roof technology in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Green roofs have proven to be energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and economical in the long term. As the global environment temperature increases, it has become necessary to implement such sustainable methods that help in achieving urban sustainability. Saudi Arabia has seen some reluctance to implement green roofs in buildings. The reasons for not adopting this system have not yet been reported. To study the awareness level of the public and the challenges they face regarding green roofs, this study was conducted. The survey questionnaire was designed with a high level of flexibility covering key issues, including relevant areas affected in a resident's daily life as well as challenges faced by the general public in installing these systems in their existing homes or new buildings. An extensive literature review and exploratory survey were conducted before a shortlist of key factors and challenges to be included in the survey questionnaire was developed. It received an overwhelming response from the people of Riyadh. Nearly 94% of people agreed that green roofs enhance the aesthetics of a building, and the same number of people agreed that they play a role in controlling air quality. On the other hand, 91% of participants considered the climate of the region to be the biggest challenge in implementing green roofs on buildings. The study concludes with strong recommendations for local authorities to plan rapid action. The study will help building owners, city planners and policy makers identify the main obstacles that residents face in adopting green roofs and will help them provide solutions to these issues.
