evidenced by her desire to pursue painting. However, her illness and despair
threaten to consume her until the end of the story, when she experiences a
transformation in her outlook on life.
Sue:
Sue is Johnsy's close friend and fellow artist. Unlike Johnsy, Sue is portrayed as
more practical and optimistic, often taking care of Johnsy and trying to lift her
spirits.
Sue serves as a source of stability and support for Johnsy throughout the story. She
is deeply concerned about her friend's well-being and does everything in her power
to help her, even when Johnsy's belief in the falling leaves seems irrational.
Sue's character embodies resilience and compassion. Despite facing her own
challenges as an artist in a difficult city, she remains steadfast in her friendship
with Johnsy and ultimately plays a crucial role in helping her friend recover.
Behrman:
Behrman is an elderly neighbour of Johnsy and Sue, described as a failed artist
who lives in the same building. Obviously, he is tough enough to go outside in
harsh weather conditions for an elderly man and paints. While his external looks
are rough, Behrman harbours a soft spot for Johnsy and Sue, often watching out for
them from a distance. He becomes particularly invested in Johnsy's health when he
learns of her illness and her belief in the falling leaves.
Behrman's defining moment comes when he decides to paint the last leaf on the ivy
vine outside Johnsy's window in an effort to give her hope and save her life. This
act of selflessness ultimately leads to his own demise but ensures Johnsy's
recovery.
