Le ciment, poudre fine à très faible solubilité, est un liant hydraulique durcissant à l'eau. Il agglomère des matériaux inertes grâce à une forte cohésion et adhésion après mélange aqueux. Selon la norme AFNOR, il contient du clinker Portland et des ajouts (gypse, pouzzolane). Minéralogiquement, il est composé d'oxyde basique CaO (C) et d'oxydes acides/amphotères SiO2 (S), Al2O3 (A), Fe2O3 (F).
Le ciment est un liant hydraulique durcissant dans l’eau, qui après hydratation présente un degré de solubilité très faible. Ce ciment, se présentant sous forme d’une très fine poudre, possède la propriété d’agglomérer des matériaux solides inertes après mélange à l’eau en leur assurant une cohésion et adhésion très fortes. D’après la norme ‘‘AFNOR’’, le ciment est défini comme étant une matière finement broyée composée d’un pourcentage de clinker portland et d’ajouts (gypse, pouzzolane,...) D’un point de vue minéralogique, le ciment peut être défini comme un mélange d’oxyde basique CaO noté C, et d’oxydes acides ou amphotères comme SiO2 noté S, Al2O3 note A, ou Fe2O3 noté F, en notation cimentaire.
