However, the country’s energy deficit currently stands at roughly $3.8bn—nearly 51 percent of its total trade deficit—and has grown every year since 2000, driven by rising public consumption and a structural failure to build genuine energy independence. The Tunisian authorities, however, are pursuing the wrong policies to address the problem. The country relies on natural gas as the main source of energy and power production. Most of the natural gas used for energy is imported from other, neighbouring countries such as Algeria, making Tunisia vulnerable to external supply distributions, geopolitical tensions, and fluctuations in international energy prices. That dependence on imported fossil fuel reduced the country's ability to maintain a fully independent and bulletproof energy system.

Introducing renewable energy will diversify the energy used and decrease the dependence on imported fuels and serve as a solid backup plan in case of any geopolitical disputes. Moreover, using renewable energy will enhance Tunisia's long-term energy security and ensure a stable energy source.
