Due to the spread of the “Western lifestyle”, these risk factors are becoming a problem all over the world – especially more and more among children, adolescents and young adults. Chinese researchers wrote that they observed an increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes for people aged 15 to 39 years by almost double. In 1990, the incidence was approximately 106 cases per 100,000 people in this age group, and it has now risen to more than 183 new cases. This increase translated into an almost half increase in healthy years of life lost due to type 2 diabetes. Among people aged 15 to 39 years worldwide, the number of healthy years of life lost due to type 2 diabetes rose from 106.34 per 100,000 people. As for the death rate associated with diabetes, there was a slight increase in adolescents and young adults from 0.74 per 100,000 people in 1990 to 0.77 per 100,000 people in 2019.

While there are different and varying proportions of this trend in countries with low GNP and highly developed countries, one risk factor appears to affect all societies around the world: overweight or obesity.
