While the world's population is now approaching eight billion people, more than half a billion people suffer from diabetes, or more than 6 percent of the population. The number of diabetics in the world is 537 million, 90 percent of whom have type 2 diabetes, which in the past was called "geriatric diabetes." But this label will soon become a thing of the past because the incidence of type 2 diabetes is on the rise among young people, Chinese epidemiologists warn in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Jinxi Shi of the Department of Epidemiology at Harbin University in China and his co-authors wrote in the prestigious British Medical Journal last week that from 1990 to 2019, an increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes was observed among adolescents and young adults around the world. This was reported by the Tiroler Tageszeitung newspaper and several German websites. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin in abundance, but the body's cells do not accept it in what is known as "insulin resistance."This is in contrast to type 1, in which the pancreas does not produce sufficient amounts of insulin because the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. In the past, type 2 diabetes usually affected older people.

In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin in abundance, but the body's cells do not accept it in what is known as "insulin resistance." This is in contrast to type 1, in which the pancreas does not produce sufficient amounts of insulin because the immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
In the past, type 2 diabetes usually affected older people. The main risk factors for developing it are overweight, obesity, reliance on an unhealthy diet, and a sedentary lifestyle with little movement.
Due to the spread of the “Western lifestyle”, these risk factors are becoming a problem all over the world – especially more and more among children, adolescents and young adults. Chinese researchers wrote that they observed an increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes for people aged 15 to 39 years by almost double. In 1990, the incidence was approximately 106 cases per 100,000 people in this age group, and it has now risen to more than 183 new cases. A significant increase on the one hand and a slight increase on the other
This increase translated into an almost half increase in healthy years of life lost due to type 2 diabetes. Among people aged 15 to 39 years worldwide, the number of healthy years of life lost due to type 2 diabetes rose from 106.34 per 100,000 people. In this age group to 149.61 according to 2019 statistics, according to the Tiroler Tageszeitung website.
As for the death rate associated with diabetes, there was a slight increase in adolescents and young adults from 0.74 per 100,000 people in 1990 to 0.77 per 100,000 people in 2019.
While there are different and varying proportions of this trend in countries with low GNP and highly developed countries, one risk factor appears to affect all societies around the world: overweight or obesity.
