B. Electrical Market:
The electrical market is currently the largest user of pultruded com- posites because it takes the best advantage of the benefits of the proc- ess and of fiberglass-reinforced plastics. FRP has inherently high di- electric strength. This insulation capability has caused pultruded products to be selected for use in the utility markets and electrical maintenance applications as well as by original equipment manufacturers. Solid roving-reinforced rods have high tensile strength and modu- lus. These properties have been required in utility guy strain insula- tors and standoff and suspension insulators. The light weight and low moisture absorption characteristics of FRP have made pultruded utility products more attractive and better performers when compared to the more traditional insulation materials. The high compression strength, especially under heat load, of solid rods has made them the standard for transformer spacer sticks and motor topsticks.
The dielectric strength and stiffness of pultruded profiles have caused them to be used for maintenance tools and insulating ladders (see Fig. 8). Fiberglass ladders have become the largest single ap- plication in the pultrusion process. Since aluminum conducts and wood absorbs moisture, making them intermittently unreliable as insulators, fiberglass ladders have become the industry standard. It is not hard to pick out the bright orange and yellow ladders atop telephone com- pany maintenance trucks.Other pultruded electrical applications include structural profiles (see Fig. 9), hot line maintenance tools, booms for utility trucks, crossarms, phase insulators, third-rail protective coverboard, and blades for wind energy systems.
