Furthermore, lipid bilayers serve not just to support the form of two layers as they sandwich hydrophobic fatty acid chains (which constitute an essential part 'protagonist' component) between hydrophilic polar head groups that can be involved in chemical reactions with their surroundings, but also provide a place where hormones can more easily bind with its receptors: for example we now know that phospholipids are involved in lipid raft formation, specialized membrane microdomains that concentrate signaling molecules—speeding up the utilization by cells of hormonal signals in this regard.
In addition, phospholipids can be turned into some biological active lipid substances such as diacylglycerol and phosphatidic acid. These second messengers amplify the signal of hormones and lead to cellular responses like metabolism or gene expression. Phospholipids therefore contribute mechanisms through which hormones achieve their effects on target cells themselves.
