Assessment:- Obtain a complete health history including allergies, especially to drugs in the ARB class, and assess for conditions that may require caution, such as renal artery stenosis or renal impairment.

• Measure baseline blood pressure and heart rate to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy and for ongoing monitoring.


• Assess for signs of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, eyelids, tongue, throat, and extremities) which is a serious adverse reaction requiring immediate medical attention.

Monitoring: - Regularly monitor blood pressure to assess the therapeutic effect of valsartan. Adjustments in dosage may be necessary based on blood pressure goals.

• Monitor renal function tests (e.g., serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen [BUN]) and electrolytes (especially potassium levels) periodically, as valsartan can affect kidney function and potassium levels.


• Watch for signs of hypotension, particularly in patients who are volume- or salt-depleted due to diuretic therapy, dietary salt restriction, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Education:- Educate patients on the importance of taking valsartan as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food. Consistency helps maintain blood pressure control.

• Advise patients to report any signs of angioedema, significant changes in urination, or symptoms that may indicate electrolyte imbalances (e.g., weakness, irregular heartbeat).


• Inform pregnant patients or those planning to become pregnant about the potential fetal risks associated with valsartan use, emphasizing the importance of using effective contraception and notifying healthcare providers if pregnancy occurs.


• Teach patients about lifestyle modifications that can improve blood pressure control, including diet (e.g., low sodium), regular exercise, smoking cessation, and limiting alcohol consumption.

Safety Measures:- Advise patients to avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless directed by a healthcare provider, due to the risk of hyperkalemia.

• Caution patients about the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness, especially during the initial stages of therapy or with dose adjustments. Recommend standing up slowly from a sitting or lying position.

Interprofessional Collaboration:- Collaborate with pharmacists to ensure appropriate dosing and to monitor for potential drug interactions.

• Work with dietitians to provide patient education on dietary modifications that can support blood pressure management.


• Coordinate with the healthcare team to adjust medications or implement additional interventions based on the patient's response to therapy and any side effects encountered.
