Un excipient est une substance inactive, naturelle ou synthétique, ajoutée aux médicaments pour améliorer leur absorption, leur goût ou leur fabrication. Exemples : dans les sirops, on trouve l'alcool (éthanol) et des sucres (saccharose, lactose, sorbitol...). Les comprimés contiennent quatre types d'excipients obligatoires : les délitants (amidon, carboxyméthylcellulose, mélanges effervescents) qui facilitent leur désintégration ; les lubrifiants (talc, silice) qui facilitent la fabrication ; les diluants (lactose, amidon) qui servent de remplissage ; et les liants (gommes, gélatine, amidon) qui agglomèrent les particules. Enfin, le conditionnement (boîte, étui, etc.) protège le médicament et sert de support d'information pour son bon usage.
