At school, Scout fights with one of her classmates because he says that Scout's father is defending a 'negro". Arthur Radley is imprisoned for stabbing his father with a pair of scissors, but he is not placed among the dark-skinned criminals because he might suffer being among them and is locked in the courthouse basement. The white community in Maycomb disapproves of Atticus's choice to defend Tom, so they verbally abuse Scout and Jem to show their anger toward their father.
The children are once again abused when they accompany Calpurnia to the black church. The anger against them (white children) was because the white community always targeted the blacks. The night Tom is brought to the court house Atticus stays guard against the angry mob who are out to kill him. They threaten Atticus and his children, and it is Scout who can disperse them with her smart questions to Mr. Cunnigham. In the American, South racism is so prevalent, that even a mixed child is abused by the community. At the trial, Atticus makes it clear that Mayella Ewell is taking advantage of her white privilege by accusing Tom who is innocent. He hopes the court will not discriminate against Tom, but the verdict by the jury shows that the Maycomb judicial system is not free from racism
