The word "anatomy" is of Greek origin meaning cutting up tome-cutting (ana=up, tome=catting) Anatomy is subdivided according to the method of description into 1) Gros (macroscopic)
anatomy and 2) Microscopic anatomy, as follows:

1. Gross (macroscopic) anatomy: Which deals with the body details which are seen by the naked eye. It is studied by means of dissection of the body. It is further subdivided into:
   a. Regional anatomy: Study of a discrete portion of the body, eg, thorax, upper limb,..... etc.
   b. Systemic anatomy: Study of a particular system as it is traced throughout the whole body, eg, nervous system, cardiovascular system etc.


2. Microscopic anatomy: Which deals with the fine details of the body (at cellular level). It is studied by the use of the microscope (it is also called Histology).
   Other subdivisions of anatomy:
   • Applied (clinical) anatomy: is the study of anatomy from the aspects of its clinical application,
   that is to say, from its relevance to medicine and surgery.
   • Surgical anatomy: is the study of anatomy in connection with surgical operations and surgical procedures (e.g. anatomy of surgical incisions, anatomy of surgical
   exposures.......).
   • Surface anatomy: is the study of the surface landmarks of the underlying bony points, muscles and tendons. It is also concerned with drawing on the surface of the body the course or position of an internal structure (e.g. surface, anatomy of the heart, the lung or the main nerves and vessels).
   • Radiological anatomy: is the study of anatomy using "X-rays" to demonstrate the
