Enanos sufren deficiencia de hormona de crecimiento (GH) producida por la glándula pituitaria. Anteriormente, se extraía GH de cadáveres infantiles, método insuficiente y con riesgo de infección. En 1979, la ingeniería genética permitió producir grandes cantidades de GH insertando el gen humano correspondiente en bacterias. Estas bacterias, en gran número, producían y luego se refinaba y probaba la hormona. En 1985, se confirmó su eficacia para tratar el crecimiento limitado en niños.
