Myth
Myths are believed to have been created by primitive peoples to answer questions about natural phenomenon. More, primitive peoples needed to pass on wisdom to the following generations. As such, they wrote stories with exaggerated events that carry morals upon which behaviour was supposed to be derived from. It can be concluded that myths are fictional stories that communicate complex issues beyond the understanding of the people who wrote them. It is worth noting that we perceive myths as fictional; however, to the people they were as true as the sun rises.
The founding peoples of Western civilisation were the Greeks. They could not understand, for instance, how the world was created and to what end. They needed to find answers to troubling issues, such as human nature, good and evil, and how to behave in the presence of guests and strangers. As a result, they produced stories that answer the questions they had.
Religion
“A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden – beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them." (b) [Religion is] "the self-validation of a society by means of myth and ritual." (Émile Durkheim, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life)
“A religious tradition has at least three essential elements, each handed down and developed in the multitude of ways traditions transmit. One element is a mythic, philosophical, or theological cosmology defining the fundamental structures and limits of the world and forming the basic ways in which cultures and individuals imagine how things are and what they mean....
A second essential element of religion is ritual. Rituals are a finite set of repeatable and symbolizable actions that epitomize things a tradition takes to be crucial to defining the normative human place in the cosmos. Early layers of ritual epitomize the hunt, nurturing of agricultural fertility, acknowledgment of political authority (worship of gods as lords), acts of commitment to other individuals, and so forth....
The third essential element is that a tradition have some conception and practical procedures for fundamental transformation aimed to relate persons harmoniously to the normative cosmological elements, a path of spiritual perfection. In theisms this usually means salvation, a right relation to God. In Buddhism it means transformative enlightenment about the truth of change and suchness.... (Robert Cummings Neville, in Foreword to Rodney L. Taylor, The Religious Dimensions of Confucianism).
CHRISTIANITY
Christianity, as one of the world's major religions, is rooted in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Its theology is rich and complex, encompassing a variety of beliefs and doctrines. Central to Christian theology is the concept of the Trinity, which posits one God in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. This triune God is the foundation of Christian belief and worship. The incarnation of Jesus Christ, God becoming flesh, is another fundamental tenet, emphasizing the belief in Jesus as both fully divine and fully human, sent to redeem humanity from sin.
The doctrine of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ is a cornerstone of Christian theology. It asserts that through belief in Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection, individuals are saved from sin and its consequences. This is closely tied to the concept of grace, the unmerited favor of God towards humans. Grace is central to the understanding of Christian salvation, as it is not earned through good works but given freely by God's love and mercy.
Another key aspect is the authority of the Holy Scriptures, which comprise the Old and New Testaments. Christians believe these texts are divinely inspired and authoritative for faith and practice. The sacraments, particularly baptism and the Eucharist, are also vital components of Christian theology. They are seen as outward signs of inward grace and essential rites for believers.
Eschatology, the study of the end times, is a significant area of Christian theology. It includes beliefs about the second coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, and the establishment of God's kingdom. The concepts of heaven, hell, and the eternal state of souls are also encompassed within eschatological teachings.
Ethical teachings, based on the life and teachings of Jesus, such as the Sermon on the Mount, form the moral framework for Christians. The call to love God and neighbour is seen as the greatest commandment, guiding social and personal ethics.
