The fridge she invented did not require electricity and could be made from car parts and other household items. After finishing her studies, Emily traveled to Africa to work on her design, spending five months in Namibia testing the fridge. She decided not to make it for profit, but rather give the design away for free to people in Africa so they could make their own portable fridges. Emily invented a special water carrier that helps women and children in Africa collect water easily. Instead of carrying a few containers, they can now carry up to five containers thanks to her design that uses tree branches and old tires. The carrier can also be used to transport firewood or other heavy items. Emily has received numerous awards, including Woman of the Year in 2009 and the Save the Planet Award in 2008.
