Les additifs alimentaires sont définis par un décret de l'Union Européenne , du 18 septembre 1989 : « On entend par additif alimentaire toute substance habituellement non consommée comme aliment en soi et habituellement non utilisée comme ingrédient caractéristique dans l'alimentation , possédant ou non une valeur nutritive , et dont l'adjonction intentionnelle aux denrées alimentaires , dans un but technologique au stade de leur fabrication . transformation , préparation , traitement , conditionnement , transport ou entreposage .
